Royal Yea hosted the annual Mary Walker Mixed Canadian Event on Saturday with 15 pairs competing, including visitors from Gardner’s Run and Southern Golf Clubs in Melbourne. Although there had been some rain on Friday the course was in very good condition. Players experienced some light rain in the late afternoon but found plenty of warm hospitality in the Clubrooms with an excellent afternoon tea provided by members.
Canadian Foursomes involves both players taking drives and then deciding on one ball to alternate shots with to complete the hole. Handicap for a pair is 1/2 of the total handicaps of both players. Winners of the day with a nett 70 were Sam and Margie Wright(25). Second were Di Holdsworthand Alan Pell(18.5)with a nett 70.5, while Greg and Vicki Clements(21) came third with nett 71. NTP on the 2nd and 18th was Graeme Quinlan and John Tanner on the 14th.
The day is held annually to celebrate the late Mary Walker who was the first female President of a Victorian Golf Club. Laurie Quinlan representing the family also mentioned how Mary came to golf late in life but once she started it became her life’s commitment..
There was also a men’s competition which was won by John Tanner(18) with 33 stableford points.
