Royal Yea Golf Club – Championships Heat Up!

Ladies’ Championships – Round 2

Wednesday saw the ladies contest their second round, with Meryl Connell coming up trumps to take the daily honours with a fabulous 93 gross and nett 69. Birthday girl Carolyn Webber also celebrated in style, playing some great golf to finish runner-up with nett 70. A pretty good way to celebrate a birthday!

The Club Championship is shaping up nicely, with Christine Simmons holding a two-shot lead over Meryl Connell and Margie Wright. In A Grade, Margie and Meryl are locked together on a gross total of 192, setting up an intriguing finish.

Christine has a commanding 10-shot lead over Vicki Clements in B Grade, while Cindy Armstrong leads Khai M-Noor by 18 shots in C Grade. Carolyn Webber has a nine-shot advantage over Lois O’Meara in D Grade.

Christine is also looking strong in the Handicap Trophy, leading Cindy by eight shots. However, with one round still to come, nobody should be reaching for the trophy cabinet just yet!

Wednesday Men’s Stableford

The men played a Stableford event on Wednesday, with Anthony La Grutta continuing his good form to take the win with 37 points. Tony Rule and Mick Sheather followed closely on 35 points each, while Anthony Coleman finished fourth with 33.

Trevor Connell claimed Nearest the Pin on the 14th, and Alan Pell took home the Club Award.

Men’s Championships – Round 2

Saturday saw the second round of the Men’s Club Championships, with Peter Johnston (17) enjoying a terrific day to take out the daily event with nett 67. Peter also collected the Monthly Medal, making it a very successful Saturday indeed!

Martin Lowe (19) claimed second place on a countback from Rick Wills (11), both returning nett 68. Gary Pollard (16) was fourth and best of the nett 70s, ahead of Jeff Moss (15) in fifth place.

There were some other notable performances around the course. Jonathan Fisher produced a spectacular eagle two on the 7th – a hole-in-one would have been impressive, but an eagle two is a fine effort in anyone’s book! Brian Simmons claimed Nearest the Pin on the 18th, while Phil Armstrong showed that a hot putter can make all the difference, taking the putting prize with an incredible 22 putts. Michael Sheather was the lucky recipient of the $10 Club Award.

The Championship Showdown

The final round takes place next Saturday, with some very close contests still to be decided.

A Grade is shaping up as a thriller, with Rick Wills on 159 leading Andrew Bohn by just one shot on 160. Jonathan Fisher is only two shots off the lead on 161. One good round – or one bad hole – could make all the difference.

B Grade is equally interesting, with Alan Pell on 171 holding a one-shot lead over Gary Pollard on 172. Unfortunately, Gary will be unavailable next Saturday, giving the others an opportunity to make their move. Jeff Moss sits on 177, with four other players on 184 still in the mix.

In C Grade, Robert O’Halloran leads Jim Redmond 195 to 203, giving Robert a useful cushion heading into the final round.

Clarke Trophy – Handicap Honours

The race for the Clarke Trophy, awarded to the player with the best nett score over the championship rounds, is also developing into a close contest.

Rick Wills leads the way on 137, followed by Jonathan Fisher on 139 and Gary Pollard on 141. Alan Pell is next on 144, with John Phillips on 145, Martin Lowe on 146, Jeff Moss on 147 and Phil Armstrong on 148.

With the final round still to come, there are plenty of players who will be hoping to put together one last good round and climb the leaderboard.

Next Saturday promises to be a great finish to the Club Championships. The ladies have several grades still to settle, the men’s A Grade is separated by just two shots at the top, and the Clarke Trophy remains up for grabs. Bring on the final round – and may the best golfers keep their nerves under control!
