Yea Golf Club Report

Week ending 14 March 2026

The week saw both the ladies and men enjoying good conditions on the course with some excellent scores recorded.

Ladies Golf

Report by Meryl Connell

On Wednesday 11th March, thirteen ladies played in the first competition of the Yea Ladies Golf syllabus. The first round of the Silver Spoon was contested in humid conditions, with an earlier hit-off proving a welcome change.

The stroke event produced some good scores, with Margie Wright (24) taking the honours with an excellent nett 72. Clearly Margie’s lay-off over the past few months has done nothing to diminish her game. Well done Margie!

Penny Britton (29) showed a continued return to form finishing with 73, while Chris Simmons (22) also recorded 73. Having played with Christine on the day, it was clear she was striking the ball beautifully but encountered a couple of unlucky holes along the way.

The Nearest to the Pin was won by Cindy Armstrong.

Play was followed by a beautifully prepared lunch provided by Miranda Gill and Vicki Clements. The ladies are certainly spoiled and very fortunate to enjoy a round of golf, delicious food and great company all in the one day. Thank you Miranda and Vicki.

On Thursday, Miranda Gill, Vicki Clements and Sharon Grogan travelled to Woodend to represent Yea in the Ruby McKenzie Salver. Vicki reported the course was quite challenging with particularly tricky greens. Woodend also enjoy the luxury of a robo-mower valued at $55,000 — something that would certainly come in handy on Yea’s hills!

While there were no golfing prizes for the Yea players on this occasion, the day finished on a lucky note. Sharon Grogan won first prize in the raffle, taking home a rug valued at $425, Vicki Clements won the second draw and Miranda Gill claimed the lucky draw prize. A successful day in the end.

Thank you ladies for representing Yea — it’s a long drive and a tough course, so the good fortune was well deserved.

Ladies interested in the Thursday 9-hole competition are encouraged to keep an eye out for details or contact Michele Willey for further information.

Until next time… Happy Golfing!

Men’s Golf

Report by Alan Pell

Wednesday saw 15 men contest a 4-Stick Stableford event in ideal golfing conditions — no wind and comfortable temperatures.

Anthony La Grutta continued his good form, winning the day with 36 points, ahead of Club President Gary Pollard with 34 points, while Club Captain Alan Pell finished third with 32 points. There were no Nearest to the Pin winners on the 11th, while Steve Rumney claimed the Club Award.

On Saturday, 20 men competed in the first round of Stableford for the Barry Moore Trophy. Barry Moore was one of the club’s outstanding golfers, winning 22 Club Championships between 1953 and 2001, along with 18 Scratch Eclectic titles during his distinguished career at Yea Golf Club.

Leading the field was the current Yea A Grade Champion Andrew Bohn (7) who returned an excellent 42 points, including a round where he pared the course. Second place went to Rick Wills (9) with 38 points, while Anthony La Grutta (16) and Rob O’Halloran (20) both finished with 36 points.

Andrew Bohn also collected Nearest to the Pin on the 11th, while Rob Gill took home the Club Award.
